Course objectives
The course is dealing with theatrical aspects of primarily non-theatrical events, therefore it's trying to elaborate on used saying "All the World's a Stage" with examples from Medieval times, mostly from czech lands.
Using secondary literature dealing with theatricality and performativity and examples of particular events the course will explain, how "scenography", or surroundings, where so called cultural performance takes place, co-create its meaning; how music, dancing and another arts become meaningfull part of these performances; how text interacts with the other components and last but not least course will be focusing on participants of these events and on performative aspects of their behaviour.

The course is held in Czech.
Learning outcomes

At the end of the course student will be able to:
- argue, why it's possible to apply methodology of theatricality also on research of primarily non-theatrical/non-dramatic (medieval) events;
- prove knowledge of main theoretics and theories of performativity and their basic thesis and terms;
- give an example of using scenography, acting, mise-en-scene, music etc. in concrete historic event and also in medieval cultural performances in general.
Syllabus
  • 1. Good friday's liturgy: Adoratio crucis, Depositio crucis, use of mobile puppets, planctus
  • 2. Preaching: preacher as actor, interaction between text and image, performance vs. literature
  • 3. Royal wedding and coronation: royal vs. ecclesiastic rituals?, public vs. private?, politics vs. culture?; tournaments, dancing, music, singing, theatre
  • 4. Royal arrival and funeral: cultural performance as theatrum mundi (parade as demonstration of medieval hierarchy), violation of scenario as demonstration of power
  • 5. Schola ludus: lecture, lectio, vagabundi's poetry, goliard's festivities
