Course objectives
The course will cover various aspects of Italian language and linguistics. The aim of the course will be to analyse the synchronic structures of Italian, with particular reference to morphological aspects and the speech dimension.
Learning outcomes
Students will learn to use the tools of the discipline, through theoretical-methodological seminars and research activities on corpora of spoken Italian. The course may include participation in a study day on Italian morphology in October, which will contribute to credits.
Syllabus
  • The course will be developed around the following topics: - morphology of Italian; - interface with other levels of linguistic analysis (including diachronic changes leading to the emergence of new morphological items); - typological comparison with different languages (including the native languages of the enrolled students); - word formation; - monographic focus on evaluative morphology; - monographic focus on parasynthesis; - the grammar of speech; - the realisation of morphology in speech; - the role of suprasegmental features in the construction of meaning in speech.

Teaching methods
Lecture and practical activities: explanation of the basic notions and problems and their application on appropriate linguistic material.
Assessment methods
Written essay on an agreed topic and oral interview on the programme. For non-attending students, the examination programme must be agreed with the lecturer.
