Abstract
Italian history and culture from the 5th to the 16th century.
Key topics
The main topics of the course Introduction to the History and Culture of Italy are as follows: barbarian tribes in Italy – the Goths, the Longobards and the Franks; the Normans and the birth of the Papal State; the Investiture Controversy – the Emperor against the Pope; the period of the comune and the transition to the signoria; the Great Schism within the Catholic Church in the Middle Ages (heresy); the period of the Renaissance and the beginning of the decline of Italy.
