Course objectives

The course "Textwork 2" develops the techniques of reading and writing argumentative texts that students have acquired in the course "Textwork 1". "Textwork 2" focuses primarily on the types of text that are needed in philological study (German Studies): excerpting scholarly texts, writing chapters of one´s own thesis incorporating approaches from several different sources, introductions and conclusions of diploma theses, literature search chapters of diploma theses, etc.
During the semester / course, the activities focus more intensely on each student's own diploma / bachelor's project.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, students will:
- be able to really benefit from current scholarly texts in German Studies, by means of having learned how to find their way through them,
- to recognize those texts´ structure, thesis, argument design, etc.
- to create an excerpt of a scholarly text taking into account the own project for which it will be used,
- to name and define the topic and thesis of the project (bachelor´s thesis)
- to create a chapter of your own work summarizing the results of the research and source studies and confront and objectively evaluate the primary and secondary sources.

Syllabus

• 1. Techniques of reading scholarly texts in German Studies. 2. Excerpting scholarly texts. 3. Practicing the use of vocabulary in the formulation of scholarly texts. 4. Literature search tasks (to the student´s own project). 5. Finding and narrowing down the topic of work. 6. Creating a chapter summarizing the results of the search. 7. Creating a chapter that confronts different approaches to the theme (of the student´s own bachelor project).
