Course objectives
The aim of the course is to introduce philosophical thought of Michel de Montaigne and Jean-Jacques Rousseau. The first half of lectures deals with the most important topics of Montaigne’s philosophy: scepticism, anthropology, problem of subjectivity, concept of history. The second half of lectures focus on the main topics of Rousseau’s philosophy: anthropology, philosophy of religion, philosophy of history, social philosophy.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student will be able to introduce the main concepts of Montaigne’s and Rousseau’s philosophy; to explain their basic problems; to formulate their assumptions and consequences; to reconstruct and to evaluate their arguments; to show their dependency on context; to characterize their historical conditionality.
