Course objectives
Knowledge of the main chronology and historical background of Mongol military and diplomatic missions to Southeast Asia.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the series of lectures the student will have an overview knowledge about the progress and impacts of the Mongolian military expansion into China and South East Asia in the context of political history of the East and South East Asia in 13th - 14th centuries. The lecture will provide and introduction to Chinese and Mongolian written sources to the history of Mongolian expansion and Yuan dynasty.
Syllabus
  • 1. Overview of political contacts of China and South East Asia until 13th century. 2. Political situation in Central Asia in the 11th - 12th centuries. Ethnogenesis of Mongols and their internal development in the 12th century. Origin, young age and rise of Chinggis Khan. 3. Subjugation of the area of present Mongolia. Expansion till the end of Chinggis Khan's life (wars with Tanggut, Jurchen, Karakitans). 4. Ögedei Khan's rule, victory over Jurchen, subjugation of Northern China. 5. Güyük Khan's rule, ascension of Tolui's descendants. Möngke Khan's rule, rise of Khubilai. 6. Seizure of Dali kingdom, founding of Yunnan province. The first Mongolian campaign to Vietnam (1257-1258). 7. Proclamation of Yuan dynasty, Khubilai Khan's rule over Northern China. Conquest of Southern Song dynasty. 8. The second and the third campaign to Vietnam (1283-1287). Attack to Java (1292). 9. Mongolian campaigns to Burma (1277-1288). Relations between Mongols and Tibet in the 13th and 14th centuries. 11. Inner development of the Yuan dynasty until its fall and founding of the Ming. 12. Reflection of Mongolian expansion in later Mongolian historiography.
