Course objectives
Course description: From the perspective of literary history, the seminar maps the changes in functions, directions, styles and genres in Czech literature of 1770-1850, especially in the context of European literature as a whole. Emphasis will be put on structural dynamics and attention will be directed not only to literary "classics" but also to conventional literature which represents the "reception horizon" of a particular era.
Syllabus
  • Curriculum: general features of 1770-1850 culture and literature; the characterisation and periodisation of the Czech Revival Period; the period of Enlightenment, rationalism, classicism; Dobrovský's generation; the cultural concept of patriotic romanticism; Jungmann's generation; subjective romanticism in the work of K.H. Mácha; the beginnings and characterisation of Biedermeier; Havlíček's modification of the Revival model; the culmination of Biedermeier in the works of B.Němcová, K.J.Erben and J.K. Tyl.
