- Course objectives
- The first part of the course will be devoted to the Czech literary tradition from the beginning of the Czech national revival till the formation of the literary study and literary criticism in modern meaning (the end of 19th century, the beginning of 20th century). In the second part the course will present the main tendencies in the Czech literary study in 20th and 21st century, especially Czech structuralism. Students will acquire a view of tradition in the Czech literary study from the end of 18th century till the present.
- Syllabus
- Seminar is devoted to the historical development, presentation of appropriate texts and commentary. We will focus on: critics from the national revival, their program and reception of particular literary works, Jungmann‘s contribution to the Czech literary tradition, Karel Havlíček Borovský and his conception of realism, critique of „the May school“ generation and its belonging with journalism and aestetics and development of literary discourses in the end of 19th century and the beginning of 20th century, then critical commentary of basic trends in the literature study (main principles of structuralism will be presented and explained in confrontation with F. X. Šalda, marxism, Václav Černý and Oldřich Králík.
