Prerequisites
"Menschen im Hotel", so lautet der Titel eines Romans von Vicki Baum, der in den 20er und 30er Jahren ein großer Erfolg war. In der Zwischenkriegszeit ist das Hotel auffallend oft Schauplatz in Romanen - doch es bleibt dabei nicht einfach Kulisse, sondern wird zum Motiv in den Texten. Das Hotel ist von diversen typischen Gestalten bevölkert (dem Portier, dem Liftboy, dem Kellner, dem Zimmermädchen), auch einzelne Orte im Hotel kehren immer wieder (die Rezeption, die Bar, der Lift, der Balkon, das Stiegenhaus). Die Lehrveranstaltung wird anhand einiger Romane v.a. der Zwischenkriegszeit (Baum, Kästner, Kafka, Roth, Wander, Zweig u.a.) analysieren, wofür "das Hotel" in den einzelnen Texten steht und aus welchen Bestandteilen der Topos des Hotels besteht.

Course objectives
At the end of this cours, students should be able to: know the literature from between the wars develop an interpretation of a novel on their own understand the topos "hotel" and his varying use in different novels identify the central passages in the text and prepare them for their colleagues design questions on the text for their colleagues and lead a discussion about the text
