Course objectives
This course is an introduction to the issues of pedagogical research. It enables the students to understand the process of empirical scholarly attitude to reality. It examines the difference between the qualitative and quantitative research and provides students with basic insight into the pros and cons of various methodological procedures, their validity and reliability. At the end of the course students should be able to: critically evaluate adequacy of the research design and evaluate methodological relevance of the research.

  • Educational sciences as social science.
  • Contemporary trends in educational research in the Czech republic and in the world.
  • Model of empirical science.
  • Process of empirical research.
  • Hypothesis, verification and falsification of hypotheses. Statistical testing.
  • Operationalization.
  • Measurement, validity and reliability.
  • Main research designs: survey, experimental research, action research, testing etc.
  • Theoretical methods.
