- Course objectives
- Course Aims: - to define the basic terms e.g. Roma, community, subculture, social exclusion, socially excluded locations, social field work - to describe the historical origin of Roma, their arrival to the area of the Czech Republic (their position in different periods), origin of the terms Roma- Gipsy –Cikán - to classify sub-ethnical divisions among Roma which result in their specific features and differentiation of individual groups with different positions and life strategies etc. - to specify religiosity of Roma and its possible manifestations in everyday life of Roma - to characterize structure, hierarchy of Roma family and roles of its members - to analyze the process of social exclusion and characteristics of socially excluded locations and their inhabitants - to specify the problem of low education among Roma living predominantly in socially excluded locations (causes and consequences) - to identify the basic barriers and causes for possible segregation of Roma children in education - to induce possible tools for integration of Roma children in the area of education

- Assessment methods
- The course is conducted as a combination of lectures and seminars. The course includes an excursion to a non-profit organization dealing with social work among socially excluded (Roma). Course Evaluation - credit: each student is required to produce a review of an academic publication (to be chosen from 3 titles) during the semester. Students elaborate individual projects on social work with children or adults in groups of 2 or 3 and present them in a seminar. 80% attendance in lectures and seminars is required.
