Course objectives
To acquaint students with the development of Czech-French relations since the Middle Ages to the present, the development of mutual stereotypes of both nations. Main attention will be devoted to 19th and 20 century, the development of francophone institutions in the Czech Republic (fr Alliances. etc.), the possibility of teaching French at home and abroad, and several prominent personalities of the Franco-Czech relations (E. Denis, H. Jelinek) and their importance for mutual understanding of both cultures.
Syllabus
  • Lecture: 1 development of Czech-French relations since the Middle Ages to the present. 2nd development of mutual stereotypes of Czechs and Frenchmen under the influence of contacts between Czech and French populations. 3rd formation and functioning of Francophone associations and institutions in the Czech Republic from 19 century. and their influence on the spread of French language and culture among the Czech population. 4th prominent for the development of Czech-French relations (E. Denis, L. Eisenmann). The lecture will be combined with a seminar in the form of work. In the seminar part of the work with authentic texts of French travelers to the Czech lands (Chateaubriand, Mérimée).

Teaching methods
Lecture: 1 development of Czech-French relations since the Middle Ages to the present, 2 development of mutual stereotypes of Czechs and French, 3 formation and functioning of Francophone associations and institutions in the Czech Republic from 19 century. (Alliances Françaises, français CercleS) and their impact on the spread of French language and culture among the Czech population, 4 development of teaching French to Czech schools and francophone education in the Czech lands 5th prominent for the development of Czech-French relations (E. Denis, L. Eisenmann, H. Jelinek, etc.) Seminar: Application of acquired knowledge on authentic texts. Through student presentations demonstrated the ability to independently integrate their theoretical knowledge in working with a particular text.
Assessment methods
Final written exam - an essay on a given topic within the scope of subject matter. Are eligible for the exam is active participation in seminars (80%).
