Course objectives
The course aims at providing a knowledge of the main topics of the subject (what textual criticism is, how to prepare a critical edition, how to read a manuscript)
Syllabus
  • The course include: an introduction to the methods and instruments of Italian philology (textual criticism); practical exercise in reading Medieval manuscripts. Since the course is quite technical, you are strongly reccomanded to attend lectures. In case you don't, instead of reading manuscripts you will have to read one day (any) of the Decameron (both short-stories and the frame).

Teaching methods
Lecture: description of the scientific discipline and its method, explanation and definition of basic notions and their demonstration on concrete texts by concrete authors. Seminar: Application of the acquired theoretical knowledge on authentic texts. In the form of a presentation the students show their capability to connect their theoretical knowledge while working with a concrete text.
Assessment methods
Analysis of a text in a seminar essay and a test.
