Course objectives
The aims of the subject may be summarized as follows: at the end of the course students should be able to acquire and apply new theoretical procedures and ways of thought both in philosophy and especially in the philosophy of language; to interpret the texts from the branch of the philosophy of language on the basis of acquired knowledge from the history of the philosophical thought on language; they can acquire the ability of the theoretical reflection of the conceptions of language in the history of philosophy; as well as the ability of the theoretical analysis of the ontological and epistemological aspects of language in various philosophical conceptions.

  • 3. The conception of language in philosophical hermeneutics.
  • Language and philosophy, ontological and epistemological aspects of language.Hermeneutical and analytical approach to language.Language and mythical thought.Theoretical foundations of the dialectic and hermeneutic approach to language - Heraclitus. The conception of language by Plato. Hermeneutic philosophical thought in the period Antiquity and Middle Ages. Hermeneutic thought and the conception of inner word ("verbum interius") by Aurelius Augustinus.
  • The conception of language in the philosophy of 17th and 18th century. Mental discourse (T.Hobbes). The relation of language and ideas, the conception of language in British empiricism and Continental Rationalism (J.Locke, G.Berkeley, R.Descartes). Noam Chomsky and Cartesian linguistics. Philosophy of language in German hermeneutics of the Romantic period (J.G.Herder). Philosophy of language by W.von Humboldt.
  • Philosophy of language by L. Wittgenstein. British and American analytical philosophy of language (J. L. Austin, W.V.O. Quine).
  • Philosophy of language in the hermeneutic thought of H.-G. Gadamer.
