Course objectives
At the DAM the subject presents an alternative to almost all theoretical subjects. This instruction stresses the students' practical skills. It is divided into two main parts: making of pottery by hand and using potter's wheel. It is quite difficult for the beginners to manage potter's wheel manufacture; for this reason there are only a small number of students to facilitate a sufficient practise. The students are expected to be sufficiently motivated for a creative activity. Active interest in manufacture of pottery even outside of the normal term of instruction is welcome. Students with various levels of pottery manufacture knowledge may take up their hitherto skills they bring to the DAM. Beginners will familiarize themselves with basic forms of pottery production, namely roller and flat slab manufacturing methods, they may then continue with free modelling; they should acquire both theoretical and practical knowledge of potter's wheel production. Lastly they will be familiarized with the broad spectre of decorating and surface finish. The goal of the subject is to create or modify the view of pottery as one of the main archaeological sources. Practical lessons should not only form practical skills but also try to enter the train of thought of old craftsmen. Students will take their products away with them.
Syllabus
  • The subject focuses at the students of archaeology, but also of other (especially) associated study fields, at their own manual production and wheel-made pottery creation. Under the guidance of Kateřina Jenáčková, an experienced graduate from SŠUŘ and VOŠ (Brno schools of crafts), the students may handle the basic techniques of pottery manufacture.

Assessment methods
It is assumed the subject will attract a great number of students; their participation (with max. 2 uncompensated absence per term) will be the main prerequisite.
