- Course objectives
- At the end of this course the student will be able to: understand and explain the concepts of fiction, fantastic, marvelous, magic, and apply them to literary texts, to use the information on the specificity of fiction in French-Canadian literary context and to compare this context with the French and Hispano-American contexts; comprehensively analyze literary text in which fantastic elements are present and determine their function.

- I. Introduction: definitions of concepts of fiction, fantastic, marvelous, magical realism, magic realism. II. The specificity of the French-Canadian literature with the French and Hispani-American ones (Theophile Gautier: La Morte amoureuse, Aubert de Gaspé fils: L'Influence d'un livre, Aubert de Gaspé pere: Les Anciens Canadiens, Honoré Beaugrand: La chasse-gallerie). III. Fairytale and History: Jacques Ferron: La Chaise du Maréchal Ferrant, Noël Audet: La terre promise, Remember. IV. Fairy-tale and reality: Jacques Ferron: L'Amelanchier, Michel Tremblay: Chroniques du Plateau-Mont-Royal, Aude: Enfant migrateur. V. Fantastic and History: Noël Audet: L'ombre de l'épervier; François Barcelo La Tribu. VI. Fantastic and the future: Michel Tremblay: La cité dans l'oeuf. VII. Conclusion: methodological assessment methods of analysis of literary works.
