Course objectives
The aim of the course is to open up the issue of scenography and its critical reflection on the example of the famous scenographer Josef Svoboda. During the course, students will be introduced to the methods of work with archives, reconstruction of theatre production and will master the tools for scenographic analysis.
Syllabus
  • 1. Different types of papers or studies about Svoboda and their methodologies, other literature on scenography, "how to write about scenography?", issue of memory and archive
  • 2. the inter-war avant-garde context: above all, F. Tröster and M. Kouřil
  • 3. The Opera of May 5th, Expo 58 and Laterna Magika, 1960's in theatre
  • 4. Collaboration with Radok and Krejča
  • 5. entering the western cultural space, grand operas (collaboration with G. Friedrich and J. Dexter)
  • 6. theoretical concept of the psychoplastic space, its genesis withing the context of Czech structuralism, establishment of "scenograhpy," Prague Quadrennial, the issue of specificity of Czech scenography
  • 7. Selected production in 1980's and 1990's (collaboration with A. Delcampe and G. Strehler), La Traviata
  • 8. Written analysis of visual component in a given production
