Course objectives
At the end of the course students should be able to understand and explain the most important religious traditions of the East. Students will be able to work with basic information on Buddhism, Hinduism and Shinto.
Syllabus
  • 1. Hinduism: Artificial religion. Origin of Hinduism as the World religion, social and historical context.
  • 2. Buddha: Life and teaching; the life of the founder of the religion.
  • 3. Cycle of rebirth: Bhavachakra. Basic Buddhist concept of the world.
  • 4. Konfucianism and Daoism; the oldest religious-philosophical system in traditional China.
  • 5. Buddhism in China; its role in China culture, history and society
  • 6. Shinto; the oldest religious-philosophical system in traditional Japon; traditional Japan mythology and its deities.
  • 7. Buddhism in Japon; its role in Japon culture, history and society (Nara, Heian and Kamakura periods; 7.-14. century).
  • 8. New religious movements in Japon: Tenrikyo, Soka gakkai a Om shinrikyo.
  • 9. Joga and tantra. Philosophical tradition of the yoga and tantric world view.
