Course objectives
Diachronic view over the development of Bulgarian standard language and Macedonian standard language. 1. Territory of Bulgarian language area. Cyril and Methodius and their activity concerning language. Old Church Slavonic language - the oldest Slavonic language. The problem of standard Bulgarian language in 19. century. Codification of the Macedonian standard language as the youngest Slavonic language in 1944/45. At the end of the course students will - be able to demonstrate the knowledge of Bulgarian and Macedonian. - have a broader and more solid understanding of key aspects of linguistics. - have a broader and more solid understanding of key aspects of comparative study of Slavonic languages - be familiar with Slavonic grammar - contrast and compare Czech and Bulgarian and Macedonian languages.
Syllabus
  • 1. The last stages of Old Church Slavonic language, differentiation of the Slavonic languages from phonetical and morphological point of view. 2. The oldest (Old Bulgarian) period in the development of Bulgarian, the golden age of Bulgarian literary tradition. 3. The period 12.-15. century (Middle Bulgarian), Turnovo literary school, 4. The New Bulgarian period, the damaskins, 5. Paisii Hilendarski and his Istoria slavyanobolgarskaya. 6. 19. century: the question of the future form of Bulgarian standard language. Periodization of development of Bulgarian. 7. New Bulgarian, Slavonic Bulgarian and Church Slavonic schools. 8. Development on the second half of 19. century - Plovdiv and Turnovo schools. 9. Important moments in the development of Bulgarian in 20. century. 10. Important moments in the development of Macedonian in 19. century. 11. Important moments in the development of Macedonian in 20. century. 12. Bulgarian and Macedonian standard language - comparative view.
