Course objectives
At the end of this course, students should be able to:
understand and explain the basics of Latin morphology;
apply their knowledge of normative grammar;
create simple sentences in Latin;
identify unknown syntactic phenomena on account of the already acquired knowledge.
Syllabus
  • Introduction to Latin language, alphabet, pronunciation and accent. Latin grammatical categories in comparison with the Czech ones. Introduction to declension and conjugation.
  • 1st declension nouns, basic prepositions.
  • 1st conjugation (present, imperfect and future indicative, imperative, present infinitive); translation of passive forms, expression of agent.
  • 2nd declension nouns, 1st and 2nd declension adjectives.
  • Verb esse, compounds of the verb esse. Adverbs of 1st and 2nd declension adjectives.
  • 2nd conjugation (present, imperfect and future indicative, imperative, present infinitive).
  • 3rd declension nouns.
  • 3rd and 4th conjugation, mixed conjugation (type capio) - present, imperfect and future indicative, imperative, present infinitive.
  • Deponent verbs.
  • 3rd declension adjectives, present participle and its use.
  • Adverbs of 3rd declension adjectives, personal pronouns, possessive pronouns, demonstrative prononus is, idem, possessive genitive and dative.
  • Double accusative construction, accusative with infinitive.

Teaching methods
Planned learning activities and teaching methods consist of seminars (grammar exercises and translation). Active class attendance and preparatory homeworks are required.
Assessment methods
Requirements for credit: regular attendance in education (50%) and written test.
