Course objectives
The course deals with the basic notions and problems in Italian semantics and lexicology. At the end of the teaching activities the students should have a solid knowledge of the basic theories in semantics (see below, course contents), from the very first theories of tropes to contemporary semantic processes in Italian language. He/She should be able to make use of this knowledge in the analysis of linguistic material in his diploma thesis.
Syllabus
  • The course is about the main problems of Italian semantics and lexicology. Using the traditional concepts of the founders of the discipline (from Bréal to de Saussure), completed by the works by Hjelmslev, De Mauro and Ullmann, the course will try to give a definition of the basic terms and notions in semantics: semantics, semiotics, onomasiology, semasiology, sign, signifiant, signifié etc. The second part of the course focuses on the semantic relation among words (hyponims, hyperonims, synonyms, antonyms, homonyms etc.) and on the word-formation processes. The course will also deal with diachronical semantics focusing on the changes of meaning, their causes, process and consequences. Italian linguistic material will serve to illustrate metaphors, metonymies, synecdoches, popular etymology.
