Course objectives
The goal is to introduce Middle-Age Aesthetics as a natural part of the branch namely as a structure of teories which most modern or contemporary thinking about beauty or art spring from.
Learning outcomes
Students will learn and acquire the current approaches, methods and concepts in use and practice.

  • 1. Plotin: beauty and art as symbol, light and abstract simplicity 2. Augustin: art as a message 3. Boëthius: Pythagorian music 4. Johannes Scotus Eriugena: irrational way to beauty 5. Suger: a theory in practice 6. 12. Century Scholastics : unum, verum, bonum 7. Bonaventura: aliud dicitur, aliud demonstratur 8. Thomas Aquinas: proportio, integritas, claritas 9. Mystics 10. Dante 11. Property of beaury as time went by: beauty as case of eternal transcendentality 12. Survey: 1000 years of thinking about and of beauty
