Course objectives
Upon successful completion of the course students will be able to understand important trends in development of museums and museology in Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia and will be capable to put them into contemporary cultural, political and intellectual context. Students will evaluate the importance of museum institutions, their collections and individual museum workers in the history of this field. They will be capable to describe the contribution of historical Czech Lands to the evolution of museological thinking in the world.
Learning outcomes
- characterize important trends in development of museums and museology in Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia and be capable to put them into contemporary cultural, political and intellectual context - evaluate the importance of museum institutions, their collections and individual museum workers in the history of this field - describe the contribution of historical Czech Lands to the evolution of museological thinking in the world
Syllabus
  • Definition of basic terms (historical museology, museum and private collections, museum, museum collection, etc.), typology of museums in the 19th and 20th century, periodization of museums in the Czech Lands, literature and sources. Pre-museum period - aristocratic, bourgeois and church private collections of the 17th and 18th centuries. Collections of educational and scientific institutions in the 18th century. Establishment of the first museum institutions in the Czech Lands - Těšín and Opava museums. Establishment, specialization, activity and outstanding personalities of the provincial museums in the first half of the 19th century. - the Francis Museum. Establishment, specialization, activity and outstanding personalities of the provincial museums in the first half of the 19th century. – the Patriotic Museum in Bohemia. Establishment and development of regional museums in the 60s-90s of the19th century. Specialized museums and their development in the second half of the 19th century. - Arts and Crafts movement. Large exhibitions of the 90s and their impact on regional museums, efforts for reorganization, museum conferences, Kliment Čermák. Land Museum at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The turn of the 19th and 20th century. and the establishment of new specialized museums. Museums in the Czech Lands during the First World War.
