Course objectives
The aim of the course is to familiarize students with the definition of the concept of magic not only as a phenomenon of traditional folk culture in the Czech Republic through the institution of the “goddess” in the White Carpathians, but also in the broader context of socio-anthropological. Lectures will be charting the history and understanding of magic and folk healing, so that students gain comprehensive information about the phenomenon of spiritual culture that exists in various forms till today. At end of the course the student will be able to understand the concepts and terminology: folk magic, folk healing, witchcraft , shamanism, neo-paganism, etc.
Syllabus
  • Specifics of the spiritual culture of qualitative research examining the example of Žítkovských goddess. Definition of the term magic, past and present. Definition of the term folk medicine, the cult of fire, tree cult, the cult of water in the folk ritualism. Definition of the term shamanism as a historical phenomenon + video projection. Definition of the history of witchcraft and neo-paganism. 6. Definition of the term divination, and history as part of folk culture and spiritual practices Žítkovských goddesses.
