Course Enrolment Limitations
The course is offered to students of any study field.
Course objectives
The aim of the course is to improve the student’s Czech pronunciation through reading and interpreting Czech texts. The student is also guided towards correct transcription of spoken language.
1. Familiarisation with Czech orthoepical norms.
2. Practical mastery of Czech phones, word and sentence stress, Czech intonation.
3. Practical pronunciation drills, which are based on the comparison of Czech phonology with the phonology of the student’s mother tongue.
4. The creation and automisation of correct habits in the field of Czech practical phonetics.
Learning outcomes
The student is capable:
- through classification and description of Czech phones in comparison with phones in their mother tongue;
- of correctly producing Czech phones, words and sentences (in the practical perspective of obtaining functional proficiency in Czech pronunciation, is able to speak comprehensible Czech without a disrupting accent);
- deduce and explain the basic rules of phonetic and phonologic features and highlight derivations from the norm.
Syllabus
  • Improvement in Czech pronunciation will be achieved through individual steps:
  • 1. Word stress and stress rhythm.
  • 2. Articulation and acoustics of Czech vowels and consonants.
  • 3. Vocalic systém (vocalic length, meaning-bearing vowel length, diphthong ou [+ diphthongs in loanwords]).
  • 4. Consonant systém (consonants with with more problematic pronunication for non native-speakers: ď, ť, ň, j; s/z, ž/š, c/č, r/l, sonant r/l, h/ch).
  • 5. The consonant ř.
  • 6. Sonority of consonants.
  • 7. Assimilation.
  • 8. Modulation of coherent speech (word stress, stress in prepositional conjunctions, non-stressed phrases, sentence stress and emphasis, tone modulation, open and closed questions).
  • In the seminars correct Czech pronunciation will be practiced progressively from the reading of individual words through to reading literary and non-literary texts and finally interpretation of a more complicated text.

Teaching methods
Study led by the teacher (theoretical training), which is related to the practical exercises, in which the discussed findings are applied.
Group and individual work, audio-lingual exercises, pronunciation drills through poetry, song lyrics and shorter prose works, interpretation of a Czech text, exercises correcting the speech of classmates and recordings of the speech of native speakers, dictations.
Assessment methods
To complete the course it is necessary to successfully fulfill the requirements of the closing written test and oral examination. It is also necessary to abide by the following regulations: 1/ Attendance of lessons includes completing work set by the teacher (homework, in-class presentations etc.) Failure to complete this work (student’s lack of preparation) is counted as an absence. 2/ Students are not allowed to change groups, apart from in exceptional cases with the prior written permission of the teacher.
