Cíle předmětu
This course aims to have a closer look at various ethnic minority and multicultural narratives that in one or another way deal with and problematize cultural identities and cultural difference. On the one hand, the selected texts will be analyzed from the perspective of how they present the relationship between minority/immigrant and mainstream cultures; on the other hand, we will also explore the ways in which these narratives may contribute to shaping, challenging, and/or undermining the national identities of settler colonies such as Canada, the USA, and Australia. In addition, the issues of language, bilingualism, writing in English about non-Anglophone cultural backgrounds, as well as the effects these narratives have on non-native speakers/readers, will be of our interest. Both thematic and formal narrative strategies will be examined to demonstrate the diversity and richness of contemporary cross-cultural narratives.
Výstupy z učení
Students will be able to critically engage with a number of contemporary literary and film narratives. They will strengthen their analytical skills, critical thinking, and argumentation skills. They will also become more familiar with less known cross-cultural narratives and backgrounds of Canada, Australia, and the USA.
