Course objectives
Emphasis will be placed on further developing students' speaking and writing skills. The main goal is to strengthen the understanding of the spoken language and the development of students' speaking skills by providing the summary of both spoken and written texts as well as interpreting them. Printed and audiovisual materials will be used (mainly, authentic texts from Arab media.) Specialized terminology I. Syrian Colloquial Arabic I. At the end of the course students will have attained level B1.1/B1.2 according to CEFR.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:
- read a complex text in Arabic;
- demonstrate an advanced understanding of a given spoken text;
- demonstrate an advanced understanding of a given written text;
- summarize and interpret more complex concepts and information.

Teaching methods
Reading and listening comprehension, translation, topical conversation, interpretation of spoken or written sources. Home-based assignments focusing on Arab media.
Assessment methods
Ongoing assessment: two essays and two oral presentations to be delivered during the term. Final examination: written test and oral examination at the end of the term comprising reading comprehension, listening comprehension, translation and conversation.
