Course objectives
This course focuses on Dutch-language poetry from the second half of the twentieth century to the present day. In each module, a movement (for example the Vijftigers) or phenomenon (for example the manifestation “Poëzie in Carré”) is highlighted and explored in depth. In addition, tools are provided to analyze poetry. In this way, students not only become acquainted with poets and poems from the Netherlands and Flanders, but also learn to substantiate their interpretation with arguments, while correctly using the appropriate literary terms.
Learning outcomes
After completing this course
- students have an overview of movements and tendencies in the post-war poetry landscape of the Netherlands and Flanders
- and are they able to situate them in a cultural-historical context
- they got acquainted with canonized and contemporary Dutch and Flemish poets and poems
- and have gained insight into mechanisms in the literary field (e.g. the role of literary magazines)
- students were introduced to different literary approaches to analyze poetry
- they know relevant literary terms and conventions
- students have learned to read and analyze poems
- and to substantiate their interpretation with arguments

Teaching methods
E-learning course with reading and listening assignments, exercises (multiple choice questions, interactive videos,...) and tests with direct feedback, forum and essay assignments with feedback from the teacher.
Assessment methods
The course consists of twelve modules. Each module is divided into two digital books with interactive exercises. The students go through it and are given a quiz to test their knowledge. In addition, they also receive a few tasks per module (reading or listening tasks, forum assignments and/or short essays).
For each module, students can earn 15 points for these tasks and the test. In total they can get 180 points. The pass rate is 60% (108/180).
Students receive automatic feedback for exercises and tests with multiple choice and short fill-in questions. For forum assignments, they receive feedback from the teacher and possibly peer feedback. They create a portfolio with short essay assignments, which are regularly evaluated by the teacher.

The e-learning course was created in 2007-2009 by Martina Loučková and Sofie Royeaerd from Masaryk University and thoroughly revised by the second author in 2021-2022. The course can be found on the Moodle platform of the Dutch Language Union.
