Course objectives
The course gives students a brief survey of history of music from the very beginnings to the mid-18th century. Apart from the emphasis on history of European music culture, enough attention will also be paid to music in the history of the Czech Lands. Please see also the given literature below and the corresponding e-learning course.
Learning outcomes
Students will be able:
Identify and summarise main features of the basic stylistic periods of the western music until the first half of the 18th century
On hearing musical selections, students will be able to identify those that are examples of early music and be able to identify the form, texture, and makeup of the ensemble.
Apply overall assesments and knowledge on the identification of selected stylistic periods
Demonstrate the changes in the understanding of subject music/musica and in the changes of its function

  • Liturgical a paraliturgical monody

  • Medieval polyphony
  • Music of the renaissance
