Unamunovo experimentování s románovou formou (nívola), modernistická próza Valle Inclána a Azorínův "surrealistický" román otevírá výhled do 20. století s jeho periodickými příklony k realismu (1900 - 1927: Pío Baroja, 1927 - 1939; Ramón J. Sender, Max Aub) a dezorientací a stagnací v poválečném období (sociální román) až po nové formální i tematické výboje, které do španělské prózy vnesli Cela, Laforet, Delibes, Quiroga.
