Course objectives
The course gives the students basic knowledge on contemporary Chinese politics with stress on historical roots of the present situation. The course accentuates international political position of China in the world.
At the end of the course should be able to:
- understand various problems in contemporary China
- identify and discuss the links between contemporary events and cultural phenomena, and their historical roots
Syllabus
  • 1. introduction - the basic political ideas in traditional China 2. political changes due to the impact of the West in the 19th c. 3. the Republic and dynastic inertia 4. Chiang Kai-shek and his political legacy 5. the Communist Party and politics before 1978 (Maoism) 6. the political system in PRC after 1978 7. liberalization, democratization and human rights after 1978 8. economic reforms after 1978 9. the perception of China in the world, geopolitics and geography 10. China and USA 11. China and EU 12. problems of identity and nacionalism – Tibet, Taiwan 13. the constitution and the institutions of power in PRC
