- Course objectives
- Main objective of the seminar is to learn Portuguese engaged poetry in the 20th Century ("neo-realism" in Portuguese poetry). Seminars are oriented to analyses and interpretation of select texts. Individual reading of participants is important.
- Syllabus
- 1. Basic historical, social, economical and cultural context of the Portugal 1928-1975; 2. Definition and characterization of the engaged literature and the neo-realism; 3. Short compendium of the Portuguese neo-realistic prose; 4. First Portuguese neo-realistic poetry generation (1930s and 1940s, „Novo Cancioneiro“); 5. Second Portuguese neo-realistic poetry generation (1950s, against the Salazar Dictatorship, Cold War, censorship); 6. Third Portuguese neo-realistic poetry generation (1960s and the first half of 1970s, Portuguese Colonial War in Africa, protest songs).
