Course objectives
Course description: Information and practice in the basics of field measuring activities and methods from the more basic parts of geodesy and topography, with an emphasis on the needs of archaeologists.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction to the study of geodesy essentials for archaeologists. History of land surveying, proofs and archaeological finds. 2. Ancient world: Egypt and the Ancient Near East – Old measures; geodetic foundations of significant structures and the preciseness of measuring; survey of land. Greek land surveying: determination of shape and size of the Earth; authors, methods and precision. Roman land surveying – old measures, aids, instruments and methods; reliability of measuring with the constructions of aqueducts and roads. 3. Medieval Arabian land surveying - determination of the size of the Earth and practical geometry. Old measures in Bohemia and Moravia; development of land surveying in the Czech-speaking countries. Determination of shape and size of the Earth in the Modern Times – graduated measuring, basic ellipsoid parameters. Austrian and English measures; metric system. 4. Significance and subject of higher geodesy. Geodetic and geometric essentials of measuring. 5. Trigonometric networks in the territory of the CR. Older cadastral network – Gusterberg and St. Stephen. Military trigonometric network. Unified cadastral trigonometric network - S-JTSK; basic networks, orders, documentation of points and the possibility of usage with archaeological activities. 6. Elevated geodetic bases in the territory of the CR. History of emergence of levelling net, its maintenance and utilization. Systems of altitudes - Adriatic, Baltic. CS unified levelling net (ČSJNS). 7. Elementary geodesy – surveying of small parts of the Earth surface. Kinds of plane coordinates and grids. Basic aids and instruments – gravity weights, level tubes, gauges, theodolites, levelling devices. 8. Demonstration of aids and instruments to lesson No 7. 9. Measuring of lengths: by tape measure - aids, work techniques; optical – aids, instruments, methods; random and systematic mistakes, accuracy of measuring. 10. Metering of angles: angular measures used; horizontal and altitude angles, azimuths, direction angles; metering of horizontal angles - aids, instruments, work techniques; metering of altitude angles - aids, instruments, and work techniques. 11. Position measurements: orthogonal method, polar method, forward graphic intersection. 12. Setting-out works: setting out of points, line, grids - aids, instruments and techniques; setting out of directions with simple aids and instruments. 13. Altitudinal measurements: basic concepts – absolute, relative altitude, elevation above sea level; trigonometric and barometric measuring of heights, geometric levelling from centre, levelling of profiles; aids, instruments, and work techniques. 14. Tacheometry: the essence of tacheometric method, aids and instruments, methods and technique of metering in the field, organization of work, calculation and plotting works. 15. Demonstration of graphic outputs of selected geodetic methods. Summation of the subject matter and preparation for field training. Conclusion of the course.
