Course objectives
The course introduces students to the basic principles and characteristics of the qualitative research. After having completed the course, students will be able to understand the differences between qualitative and qualitative approach, and to employ basic methods of the qualitative research. Classes focus on the different phases of research based on field data collection. Gradually, students learn to formulate research questions and start to prepare for the field research, conducting interviews, transcribing and analyzing textual data. Emphasis is placed on the selection of suitable research topic with regard to chosen research method. The focus is placed on students' own research work under the guidance of the lecturer. The course encourages the development of capacity for independent and responsible work in the areas of field research and analytical work. At the end of the course students will be able to create their own qualitative research project independently and then implement it in the practice.
Syllabus
  • Introduction to the course: Qualitative versus quantitative research, qualitative research. Preparation - PROJECT. Topic, puzzle and research questions. Selection of the surveyed units. What is the fieldwork? Entrance to the field - the field relations, rights and obligations. Methods of data collection, interviews, participant observation and condensed description. Other forms of cultural texts, visual data. Processing methodologies – Transcription, Data Processing - methods and techniques of textual analysis, Data processing - grounded theory and coding processing, Presentation of the final project workshop.
