Course objectives
After completing the course the students will be able to explain the major schools of the philosophy between 1850s and early 20th century (positivism, neo-Kantism, irrationalism, Marxism, phenomenology, existentialism) and their methods of argumentation. This knowledge will enable them to critically evaluate current varieties of the schools.

  • 1. Positivism (Comte, Mill, Spencer) 2. W. Dilthey 3. Neo-kantians 4. Kirkegaard 5. Schopenhauer 6. Nietzsche 7. Marx and Marxism 8. Husserl and Phenomenology 9. Pragmatism 10. Analytic philosophy 11. Basic branches of French philosophy of 20th century.

Teaching methods
Course is based on lectures dealing with major philosophical trends and figures of 19th and 20th philosophy and on independent research.
Assessment methods
Colloquium consisting in written test based on the lectures and assigned work. Colloquium requires two written seminar papers based on two books by authors of different philosophical schools of the era. Each paper minimum 5400 characters.
