Course objectives
After finishing the course students:
- are familiar with issues concerning the historical development of written and printed texts;
- acquire the rules of editing theory and practice in their development;
- are able to explain forms and functions of old prints;
- understand the methods of a critical edition preparation;
- are able to edit a chosen text according to valid rules.
The seminar is concentrated on the work with the text, its preparation for edition and on the work of editor: problems of the transcription and the transliteration and the preparation of the critical apparatus; it studies also different types of edition.
Syllabus
  • 1. The history of manuscript and old edition;
  • 2. the history of script;
  • 3. the evolution of libraries since the Middle Age;
  • 4. the appearance and the form of the old edition;
  • 5. the principles of the edition of the old literature;
  • 6. the questions concerning the modern texts;
  • 7. the priciples of the modern practice of edition;
  • 8. the overview of the aids and the work with them;
  • 9. the transcription, the transliteration;
  • 10. the edition of the chosen text:
  • 11. the linguistic preparation of the text;
  • 12. the creation of the critical apparatus;
  • 13. the work of the proofreading.

The seminar is based on methods of presentation, application, collective and individual work of students.
Assessment methods
Requirements for obtaining the credit are: writing a seminar paper and passing a written test.
