Course objectives
The seminar will focus on the presentation of signifiant texts of the Czech humanism. It will introduce frequent genres and will also pay attention to the main attributes of the developing book culture.
At the end of the course students should be able to:
- use the information about the genre system of the literature of Renaissance humanism period;
- characterize this literature and its functions;
- be familiar with specialized literature and methodology;
- be able to interpret the chosen texts;
- work with basic findings and methodological procedures.
Syllabus
  • The aim of the seminar is to introduce the literature of the Czech humanism, its important themes, frequent genres and functions.
  • The seminar will especially devote to these topics:
  • - Literary theoretical background of creation;
  • - the introduction as a program text;
  • - entertaining literature and its reader;
  • - faith and confession, religious polemics;
  • - so called anti-Turkish literature;
  • - historiography and education;
  • - travelogue and pious pilgrimage;
  • - Occasional poetry as a guide to life;
  • - development of the specialized literature.

The method of the course is based on working with texts – explication, reading, interpretation and discussion.
