Course objectives
The objective of the course is to help students with the first stages of their original research project/theoretical analysis. The course helps students develop their skills in outlining a strategy plan for their research project, formulating research goals, conducting and writing up a literature review, derive a theoretical model and research hypotheses based on the review, choose appropriate research methodology and design, plan and perform data collection, analyse data, formulate conclusions in a way appropriate for scientific literature, and critically evaluate the limitations and contributions of one’s research and point out links with previous research, future directions, and potential applications. In case the student chooses to conduct a purely theoretical study, the course aims especially at developing his/her skills of critical selection and evaluation of relevant existing models and findings, in-depth processing of a selected topic, integrating different approaches and theoretical models above and beyond the existing reviews and syntheses, critically analysing a large number of primary sources, evaluate the importance and methodological and empirical foundations of published theories and approaches, deriving original conclusions and theoretical models using the principles of deductive and inductive reasoning, and proposing future research directions and/or original methodological solutions.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course students will be able tp use their skills in outlining a strategy plan for their research project, formulating research goals, conducting and writing up a literature review, derive a theoretical model and research hypotheses based on the review, choose appropriate research methodology and design, plan and perform data collection, analyse data, formulate conclusions in a way appropriate for scientific literature, and critically evaluate the limitations and contributions of one’s research and point out links with previous research, future directions, and potential applications.
Syllabus
  • • Topic selection: describing and justifying the choice of the research problem/theoretical problem
  • • Study of basic relevant literature, narrowing of the topic, and formulation of research goals: describing and justifying the theory-driven conceptual model of the study (how and why the studied constructs or phenomena should be related); formulating research questions and general hypotheses; defining key constructs in the study
  • • Construct operationalization – choice of methodology and development of a research proposal: reviewing and critically evaluating eligible research approaches; choosing and justifying research design and specific methods for the study; formulation of specific hypotheses (if applicable for the given type of research); outlining a strategy and preparing materials for data collection.
  • • In case of a theoretical project: formulating research goals; choosing and justifying approaches for further theoretical analysis; identifying and formulating key arguments; drawing a detailed outline of the thesis with a complete list of topics addressed; study of literature

Teaching methods
individual consultations with the supervisor
Assessment methods
Evaluation is derived from consultations with the supervisor, study of literature relevant to the project, and attending to the supervisor’s instructions and requirements in a timely manner. Based on their interests and preferences, students register for one of the topics proposed by the supervisors. They then agree on the schedule of individual consultations with the supervisor. In order to obtain a credit for the course, the student has to comply with the requirements of the supervisor regarding the time, frequency and content of the consultations. The supervisor awards or denies the course credit after deciding whether the student’s progress on his/her project satisfies the requirements for a Bachelor’s diploma thesis.
