Course objectives
At the end of the course the students will have a general knowledge about the major, they will know the history of Vietnamese studies in Czech Republic and in the world. Finally the students should be able to understand the data important for Vietnamese studies, i.e. related history and the structure of public institutions in Vietnam. The course History of Vietnamese Studies is a profile core course of the study programme Vietnamese Studies. Content of this course and acquired knowledge will be also a part of the Final State Examination. The course is open for students of other study programmes – in such a case only final written examination with requirements of more moderate results is needed to pass the course.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course:
- students will be able to describe the process of discovering of Vietnam and its neighborhood by the European cultural area, especially from the 16th to the 19th centuries;
- students will know main figures of Roman-Catholic missions in Vietnam from the 16th to the 19th centuries and know their main works and their contribution to the knowledge of Vietnam in Europe;
- students will know about the beginnings of Vietnamese studies in the West in the period of the French colonial era, they will know main scholars of the period and know their principal works;
- students will know about the essential Chinese sources to the history a culture of Vietnam;
- students will orientate in the history of the Vietnamese studies in France (since the end of the colonial era), Russia, Germany, USA etc. and know about the centers of Vietnamistic research worldwide;
- students will be familiar with Vietnamese studies in Czech (and Slovak) Republic, will know main scholars and their works;
- students will have a general idea about the content of the subject field.

  • 1. Introduction. 2. History of discovering of Vietnam. 3. Colonization of Vietnam. 4. Chinese and Asian viewing of Vietnam. 5. European viewing of Vietnam. 6. First informations about the Vietnamese language in Europe. 7. Influence of Chinese and European languages on Vietnamese. 8. Important specialists in Vietnamese studies and their principal works. 10. Centers for Vietnamese studies in Czech Republic and in the world. 11. Czech-Vietnamese relations and Vietnamese in Czech Republic.

Lectures,presentations and discussion about literature (fundamental books representing the history of Vietnamese studies and the process of acquainting Europe with Vietnam)
Assessment methods
Students of the study programme Vietnamese Studies: 1) three written tests during the course - at least 50 % of correct answers is needed to pass for final written examination; + 2) final written examination: at least 75 % of correct answers is required to pass the course. Students of other study programmes: only final written examination is compulsory: at least 50 % of correct answers is needed to pass the course.
