Course objectives
This course offers a taste of literary works written in connection with isolation and life in seclusion in the broadest sense from Antiquity to the Modern Period. Based on detailed commented reading, students will get to know these literary works in the wider context of the given historical situation. The aim of the course is to show parallels in the development of European literature in various periods. Students will learn to independently interpret selected texts.
Learning outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:
- list the most important Ancient Greek and Roman literary products that were written in exile or another type of isolation and characterise them;
- characterise selected texts from the Latin Middle Ages that were written during a period of crisis or deal with crisis;
- characterise selected modern texts stemming from the Mediterranean that were written during a period of crisis or deal with crisis.

Assessment methods
Requirements for credit: passing a written test consisting of multiple-choice questions as well as open answers, minimum pass level 60%. Points will be deducted for wrong answers.
