Course objectives
After passing the seminar, students should be able to prepare a complete electronic document (for example, a thesis, a scientific paper, slides for presentation) of high quality which meets all basic typographical principles and rules using the typographical system TeX (LaTeX). They should orient in typographical terms and be able to create and correct general textual electronic documents for printing.
Moreover, they should be able to create a simple website using HTML and CSS, e.g. a simple personal university page with a brief CV.
Learning outcomes
After passing the course, students will be:
■ familiar with the basic terms from typography,
■ able to prepare a complex document (e.g. a bachelor's thesis) in TeX/LaTeX,
■ able to create a simple web page in HTML with visual styles in CSS,
■ able to prepare slides in a system other than MS PowerPoint, for example using Beamer document class in LaTeX.
Syllabus
  • Basic typographical terms (typesetting elements, typeface and its classification).
  • Typographical rules.
  • Typografical system TeX/LaTeX (origins, installation, basics, document structure and typesetting types, tables and figures, automatic generation of a table of contents and citations).
  • HTML a CSS (syntax overview, options, trends).

Teaching methods
Practically and theoretically oriented presentations combined with exercises in a computer class.
Assessment methods
Written theoretical exam (test) in course of semester. Final practical assignment.
