As part of the compulsory courses of the Bachelor's degree, the student takes either ETBA109 Systematics in Folk Culture or ETBA136 Slavic: Ethnology and Slavic Studies.

Course objectives

The course Slavs: Ethnology and Slavic Studies presents an insight into the problems of Slavonic studies in the historical context and in the present. It introduces students to the basic pillars of Slavic Studies as an interdisciplinary field and provides a basic overview of the ethnogenesis of contemporary Slavic peoples in Europe. It also deals with research on the material, spiritual and social culture of the ancient Slavics.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this course, the student will be oriented in Slavonic studies from the perspective of history, archaeology, linguistics and ethnology. The student will be able to describe the ethnogenesis of the Slavic peoples in Europe, the classification of the Slavs (trichotomous division), and give an overview of research on the material, spiritual and social culture of the ancient Slavs.

• 1. Introduction to the study of the Slavs - Slavonic studies, approaches, context of the time, view of individual disciplines on Slavs (archaeology, history, linguistics, ethnology), interdisciplinary approach
• 2. Historical excursus, earliest written sources on the Slavs
• 3. Linguistics, Proto-Slavic, Slavic languages today
• 4. Slavs and ethnology - research into the material, spiritual and social culture of the ancient Slavs
• 5. Ethnogenesis of Slavic peoples - trichotomous division (Western, Eastern and Southern Slavs)
