Course objectives
Educational psychology examines the psychological patterns of changes that affect the subject in an educational process. Students will get acquainted with the basic and latest findings of this special psychological scientific discipline and with the applications of the theoretical knowledge in the everyday process of learning, education and self-education of an individual.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course, they will increase their level of self-knowledge and understanding of pupils, improve their own methods of successful learning, and reveal and improve their own learning style. They will also gain deeper knowledge about the main actors in the educational process (teacher, pupil).
Syllabus
  • 1. Educational psychology as a scientific field. Definition, subject and mission (function) of educational psychology. Educational psychology and related disciplines: general psychology, developmental psychology, social psychology, school psychology and education. System of educational psychology. Educational psychology as a part of psychological studies.
  • 2. Methods in educational psychology. Methods for collecting data: interview, observation, anamnesis, questionnaire and survey, analysis of activity products, psychological tests, experimental methods, sociometry. Methods for exploring data: qualitative and quantitative approaches. Research in educatiopnal psychology. Ethics of psychodiagnostics.
  • 3. Learning. Psychology of learning as a special psychological discipline. Psychological theories of learning. Concept of learning (broader and narrower concept), definition. Function of learning. Phases of the learning process. Learning curve. Classification of types of learning.
  • 4. Laws of learning: motivation, transfer, repeating, feedback.
  • 5. Learning factors (learner, situation in which learning takes place, learning material, teacher). Learning methods (partial learning method, overall learning method, combined learning method; PQRST, overlearning, learning aloud and silently, individual and group learning, suggestopedy, etc.).
  • 6. Learning styles. Definition, genesis, some typologies, diagnostics of learning styles. Self-regulation of learning. Pupil's concepts of learning. Prerequisites for successful study. Study failures and their solutions.
  • 7. Psychological aspects of evaluation, testing and classification pupils' learning outcomes. Definition of terms: evaluation, testing and marking. Functions of testing and evaluation. Types of examinations (oral, written, practical). Pre-exam and exam state - exam fever/stage fright (symptoms, consequences, reduction, types of stage fright).
  • 8. School success/failure. Forms of failure. Analysis of school failure of pupils - causes. Psychological characteristics of unsuccessful pupils - typically and atypically unsuccessful pupils. Psychological aspects in eliminating school failure. Failed personality/failed pupil syndrome. Self-efficacy, academic self-efficasy.
  • 9. Creativity in school. Creativity - definition, factors of creativity, development of creativity, stages of the creative process, levels of creativity, factors and conditions for the intentional development of creative thinking of pupils, the position of a creative pupil in the class. Teacher's creativity.
  • 10. Gifted pupils - exploring and developing their personality. Giftedness - definition. Identification of gifted pupils. Typology of gifted pupils. Education of gifted pupils, possibilities for further development of gifted pupils. Myths and prejudices about gifted children.

Lectures, seminars, exercises, class discussions, homework, reading.
Assessment methods
Assessment methods: examination.
Requirements for successful completion of the course: active participation in the lesson, seminar paper, knowledge test.
Deadline for submitting the seminar paper: 6/5/2024 - in electronic form (to the subject submission office in IS) and also in printed form.
