- Abstract
- The aim of the course is to introduce students to one of the two standard written varieties of Norwegian, Nynorsk, and to Norwegian dialects.
- Learning outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:
- identify and summarise key features of the historical development of Nynorsk
- use basic linguistic structures of Nynorsk
- describe the main groups of Norwegian dialects and their characteristic features
- Key topics
The course is divided into two thematic blocks. The first block focuses on acquiring the basics of standard Nynorsk. The second block is devoted to the classification and description of Norwegian dialects.
Block 1
- The linguistic ideals of Ivar Aasen and his successors.
- The development of Nynorsk from the early 20th century to the present day.
- Morphological characteristics of Nynorsk: verbs, nouns, pronouns.
Block 2
- The relationship between Nynorsk and Norwegian dialects.
- Major differences among Norwegian dialects: Eastern and Western Norwegian dialects.

- Method of verifying learning outcomes and course completion requirements
- Course completion is based on two components. After the first block, students take a written test assessing their knowledge of Nynorsk as a written standard. After the second block, students give a presentation describing and analysing a selected Norwegian dialect. Regular attendance is also required.
