Course objectives
Basic survey of the groups of organisms which were formerly called "lower plants". Taxonomic units, classification. Prokaryota: classification of cyanobacteria in recent system. Eukaryota: endosymbiotic origin of the semiautonomous organelles. Survey of the particular divisions of the algae, fungi and "fungi-like organisms", their classification on lower levels: classes and orders. Basic characteristics, their function in the ecosystems, their importance. Recent opinions to the position of the mentioned groups in the system of all organisms (different kingdoms).
