Course objectives
The aim of the subject is to make students familiar with methods used in environmental microbiology with main emphasize on latest molecular methods.
Syllabus
  • Introduction, sampling methods from various environments, determination of the form and arrangement of microorganisms in soil, isolation of microorganisms, biomass measurements, determination of microbial activity, methods of extraction of environmental R/DNA, creation of metagenomic libraries, diversity determination of microbial communities, exploitation of PLFA and FAME in diversity studies, fingerprinting in environmental microbiology (T/DGGE, SSCP, LH-PCR, T-RFLP), method of reassociation of environmental DNA, usage of metagenomic libraries and pyrosequencing in environmental microbiology, isotopic methods, chromatographic methods (gas and liquid chromatography).
