Course objectives
Main objectives are to learn current phylogeny of eukaryotes, particularly metazoans and evolution of their organ systems. The course also includes laboratory classes focused on common taxa of the Czech fauna and identification of free living unicellular eukaryotes, poriferans, cnidarians and ectoprocts.
Learning outcomes
Students will gain ability to: - describe modern trends in understanding of Eukaryote phylogeny and particularly phylogeny of "invertebrates" - understand basic principles of the evolution of animal organ systems - identify Czech species of Porifera, Cnidaria, Ectoprocta, and some free living groups of Protozoa

  • 1. Current phylogeny of eukaryotic superlineages and basal metazoans • 2. Free living unicellular eukaryotes: advances of individual taxa • 3. Free living unicellular eukaryotes: the Czech fauna • 4. Porifera: the Czech fauna and identification of species • 5. Current phylogeny of metazoans: Eumetazoa and basal Bilateria • 6. Hydrozoa: the Czech fauna and identification of species • 7. Ectoprocta: the Czech fauna and identification of species • 8. Current phylogeny of metazoans: protostomians • 9. Evolution of organ systems: nervous, respiratory, digestive, and reproductive systems • 10. Evolution of organ systems: body cavity, excretory and circulatory systems • 11. Current knowledge of the phylogeny of higher taxa of invertebrates
