Course objectives
This course builds on GIS in Botany and Zoology (Bi9000). It is designed for students of biology who want to continue working on GIS topics and want to deepen their knowledge and especially the skills of working with GIS software.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the Bi9000, students were able to work on a project independently, using several follow-up tools in a complete workflow. In   Bi9009, students learn to build GIS functions into more complex models, write or edit scripts and run it. In addition, students will learn to publish the results of these workflows, both in the form of cartographic correct map outputs, as well as in maps published in the Internet environment. Part of the course will focus on using free GIS software so students' skills are not only tied to ArcGIS. The course will also include some more sophisticated analyses that have exceeded the time capabilities of GIS in Botany and Zoology (Bi9000).
Syllabus
  • Network analysis (on the example of the river network)
  • 3D Surface Surface Survey (on the example of changes in the volume of river terraces)
  • Linking several adjacent tools to the model
  • Using a command line for recurring tasks
  • Modify a script and run it, writing your own simple script
  • Publishing results, advanced work with symbology
  • Publishing data on the Internet using ArcGIS Server
  • Publishing data in Google (KML)
  • Analysis of satellite imagery
  • FreeGIS software (Quantum-GIS)
