Course objectives
The aim of this course is to learn to express basic scientific thoughts and processes using MS Office and selected software for data visualisation, on the level allowing study of natural sciences at the undergraduate level. The emphasis will be put on preparation for the future laboratory/practical courses, including simple data processing, their graphical presentation and preparation of the protocol and similar technical documents.
Learning outcomes
Upon course completion students will be able to:
- Use the tools from MS Office to prepare technical documentation.
- Work with simple, mainly quantitative, scientific data.
- Describe observation.
- Choose suitable software and properly visualise scientific data.
- Express basic scientific thoughts and processes in a protocol and an essay.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction, connecting to university, available software licences. Essay, scientific essay.
  • 2. Laboratory diary. Keeping track of laboratory work.
  • 3. Protocol. Preparation of tentative protocol.
  • 4. Text formatting using MS Word.
  • 5. Text structure, style. Logic and coherence.
  • 6. Data. Measurement, accuracy, errors, sifnigicant figures. Excel (tables).
  • 7. Analysis of common mistakes in students' texts.
  • 8. Data visualisation. Basic characteristics of graphs and figures.
  • 9. Making graphs and figures in MS Excel.
  • 10. Making graphs and figures in QtiPlot.
  • 11. Making graphs and figures in Origin.
  • 11. Basic characteristics and practical work with Geographic information system (GIS).
  • 12. Graphic tools for chemistry and biology (ChemSketch, BioRender).

Assessment methods
Credit is given for writing an essay in the first half of the semester, then preparing a protocol based on a fictional laboratory experiment at the end of the semester (includes description of experiment and corresponding dataset). Attendance at seminars is also required (not more than 2 absented hours).
