Abstract
Within the course Phytopathology, students will be introduced to the complex relationships between host plants and causal agents of their diseases (pathogens), from general principles to well-known phytopathogens to the mechanisms of plant-parasite coevolution.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course, the student is able:
- to describe the infection process and its relation to environmental conditions, disease x-angle; pathogenicity of disease agents vs. plant resistance; principles of coevolution; principles of integrated plant protection
- to explain phytopathological issues – methods of studying pathosystems, institutionalization in the Czech Republic
- to identify common diseases
Key topics
1. Phytopathology - basic terminology. Historical background.
2. Plant diseases - classification, spectrum of biotic agents, diagnostics.
3. Ecological relationships, parasitism, pathogenicity. Life vs. infectious cycle of parasites.
4. Pathogen infection process. Host response to infectious agents - resistance, susceptibility, tolerance.
5. Host-pathogen interaction at the molecular to organ level. Mechanisms of plant resistance.
6. Genetic aspects of the host-pathogen relationship. Coevolution. Host jumps.
7. Methods of studying plant pathosystems, examples of natural vs. cultural. Environmental factors influencing the host-pathogen relationship.
8. Epidemiology. "Boom and bust" cycles. Pathometric methods. Predictive models.
9. Fundamentals of plant protection - IDM, IPM. Biocides and their influence on the dynamics of pathogen populations.
10. Examples of important diseases in the Czech Republic.
11. Examples of important diseases in the Czech Republic, focused on invasive fungi.
12. Collections of microorganisms. Institutions, databases, applications dealing with phytopathology and plant medicine.
